Festival madness, you've gotta love it! Three days of tramping around, listening top your favouite bands. It's what summer was made for.
A couple of ocean loving art students Lisa Adams and Kerry Mansfield had been talking about working on a collaborative project for years. Then Kerry taught herself to make glass beads and Nalu Beads was formed. SurfGirl asked Lisa about their venture.
What was the inspiration for Nalu Beads?
Where we live is our inspiration....we are based in Croyde, North Devon, so surfing and the stunning coastline is not surprisingly a big influence. We share a love of the sea, although Kerry would rather paint it and I would rather be in it!
What was your aim?
We could see real potential in creating a credible piece of surf lifestyle jewellery. We wanted to offer an alternative to the mass produced, often unethically sourced jewellery sometimes found in seaside retail outlets.
Tell us a bit more about the beads?
Our first collection, the Break Bead collection, was based on the local breaks on the North Devon coastline. Now theres the Retro Bettys, The Islands and the Sticks, so you can choose your favourite break, board and heroine or your favourite colours and yes, they can be worn in the sea!
We are insisting on sustainable packaging as we want to have the least possible impact on the globe SO we have got together with some nice people from Atlas Packaging who are helping us to develop a box that is made from a material that is 100% recyclable, compostable and bio-degradable, it also has a minimum of 70% recycled content AND we're supporting a local company in doing so... thinking global, supporting local... its our favourite mantra right now! Lets all try it.
Nalubeads, the South West based surf bead company, will be introducing 9 new bead designs. The "Cornish Breaks" will be the first of two collections representing Cornish surf destinations. The first collection will include Fisral, Polzeath, Bude, Morgan Porth, Watergate Bay, Crantock, Holywell Bay, St Agnes, Porthmeor and Sennen Cove. Lisa Adams, co founding partner, says "With so many Cornish surf spots to choose from we decided not to limit ourselves to one collection".
The Cornish Break collection will be available from Tiki in Braunton and online at nalubeads.com.
Nalubeads of Croyde Bay in the South West of England have identified a gap within the surf retail market for more individual and higher quality jewelry items.
Nalubeads handcraft exclusive, Murano glass beads that can be worn in any number of ways. Each bead is individually designed and inspired by the many different aspects of surfing.
Their new range includes 4 collections:
The Breaks - The 9 top surfing hotspots of North Devon
The Retro Bettys - 8 legendary girls of surf
The Sticks - Board shapes
The Islands - Beautiful island surfing destinations
Kerry Mansfield, co founder and designer said "Nalubeads provide the opportunity for the wearer to express their individuality by selecting beads that are meaningful or symbolic to their own experiences, their favourite beach....board shape....or hero.....so yours is a unique personal collection"
Nalubeads provide an antidote to the mass produced, often unethically sourced jewelry that has historically been found in surf retail outlets globally.
Authorised U.K Nalubeads retailer Tiki International have just launched the entire collection in their Braunton store, so it looks like the local Nalu story starts here...... at home in North Devon.
Nalubeads are also available online from nalubeads.com
